Caribbean is a Dynamic Object Operating System.
    # Dynamic - you can change any part of the OS while it is running and changes take place immediately.
    # Object - everything is an object. Some of the obvious classes of objects are Event, Person, Email, Note, Spreadsheet, HTML Page, Song, Movie, Image, Phone Call, Application, Method, Class.

Caribbean is different from other Operating Systems in that:
    # There's no need to port it to different hardware, since it already runs on almost all computers. Caribbean uses the Squeak VM to run on top of x86, powerpc, ARM, cellphones, and Intel XScale, with handhelds being the primary focus. Applications for Caribbean work on all the supported architectures without modification.
    # It only has one window. This is the most distinguishing element of Caribbean. With only one window you are able to view and edit all the system objects and applications. Contrary to being a limitation, this allows great flexibility without losing simplicity. With one web browser window you can perform thousands of tasks, and with Caribbean you can perform many more.

I think the simplistic object-oriented layout is good. One thing I would definitely love to see is a handheld OS that is vector driven rather than bitmap driven, especially given the frustration that peopel have with the VGA pocket PCs either being stuck with huge toolbars, or microscopic ones. An object oriented simple OS based on scaleable vectors could have unlimited customization possibilities, not to mention hardware flexibility.

I'll have to find out more about this, but having this be totally expandable I think is a good idea... are there any screenshots of this OS running in VGA by any chance?

edit: I misread that this was made by someone who worked for Apple, sorry for the confusion

Seriously? Done by some Apple guys? I just skimmed through the concept and must have missed that part.
Funny though, because as I was reading I kept thinking it sounded like the old "soup" concept implemented in Newton. Guess I was right and soups were awesome! Thanks for the note there, I must read it more closely when I have time.

    It actually says:
"Caribbean runs on top of the Squeak Virtual Machine, a system written by Alan Kays, Dan Ingalls, and others at Apple and later Disney. The authors of Squeak are the original creators of the very first object-oriented programming language and the design of the graphical user interface. "

..I'm not sure you can infer from that that the makers of Caribbean are from Apple (only the makers of the system it runs on top of, Squeak Virtual Machine).
