Default NYC Boy trying to use wifi after buying new SD Wifi card

i am a new wifi user, and am having problems with it. i have an ipaq 2215, and a sandisk sd wifi card. i also installed boingo software, as well as wififofum software to be used as sniffers.

at home, i can connect fine with my wireless router, and the name automatically connected is default. very simple...

when i go around the city to known free wifi locations, i have trouble first of all figuring out which access points to go onto (because some locations have up to 10 different access points to choice from). second of all, i try connecting on to several of them with no luck...i always seem to get a unable to connect message.
i have been using boingo more because i do not really like wififofum that much.

    can anyone help?

but i guess my main question is when i go to bryant park using your sniffer, does it automatically connect me onto a free wifi access point? or do i somehow need to know which one is free and connect onto it? cause at union square, which i frequent everyday, there are so many of these access points, and when i try them, none of them seem to work or get me connected.

you'll just have to try. near barnes and noble there is a starbucks above so avoid that area at union square. also near verizon phone booths. use that cirond one.

thanks for your reply...i do know to avoid tmobile and verizon since you usually have to be a paid member to access those...but what about the other ones? just use trial and error to find one that works? i figured it would be more direct than that since some company from the city provides free wifi there, i figured there were be a free AP called 'union square' or 'free wifi' or something like that...but they all have strange names.

    Default yah

I only have experience connecting in Bryant park, but that's about it. The rest of my sniffing took place in Toronto. Now I live in a small town in Southern California so I can't really sniff around.

    but try bryant park.

It's called Cirond's PocketWiNc and yes, it's the killler app for WiFi on Pocket PC.

It will quickly detect Hotspots and AdHoc's and let you know if they have WEP encryption and Internet access, etc...

    You should try it...

    Good luck!
