Exclamation The return of the TodayPlus Forum

As some of you might know, the "official" TodayPlus forum closed on August 1, 2004. I have decided to host a replacement forum and with the help of Eitel, I have recovered the old forum as well. The new TodayPlus home page/forum can be found at:

I was interested in checking out the new forum for TodayPlus and checking out the latest and greatest things going on for TP. But I ran into "Important Forum Announcements"

That being said, now it is time for all the important stuff. While the history of this forum is that of the official TodayPlus Forum, unfortunately TodayPlus can no longer be downloaded from this forum. Any distribution of the TodayPlus application will immediately be deleted upon its discovery and the poster of it being banned from this forum. TodayPlus can be found elsewhere on the Internet, just do a search for it, you?ll find it. Even if you found a copy of TodayPlus, all officially released copies have expired.

there is to be no discussion of any hacks to get TodayPlus running beyond its expiration date. As with the distribution of the TodayPlus application, discussion of any hacks will also result in the poster being banned and the post being removed.

The last important thing that needs to be said is about the use of this forum. The forum can be used freely by all to discuss help and support of TodayPlus and the distribution of its freely given skins and graphics.

With these restrictions I am left wondering just what purpose this replacement forum serves? I can't ask about where to find TP. I can't ask about how to circumvent the date expiration.

Apparently circumventing the date expiration is "a bad thing".... So why have a forum to support people who have engaged in this "bad thing"?

    I just don't get it.

I understand it is an awkward stance, but both of these restrictions were in place when the forum was closed by Eitel, see this post. Eitel comments were based on an apparent email that BenL from PDA Corps received directly from SRS, see this post. Even Brighthand has a similar policy on this subject.

So yes I do agree that having a forum for application that cannot be distributed on it doesn't make sense. There is however, several people still running a working copy and can utilize the great information contained on the forum.

Without SRS's apparent further development of future versions, I am sure there will come a day when TodayPlus might not run on future versions of Windows Mobile. Until that day, the need of a forum for TodayPlus may still be useful.

The "working copy" is hacked. If it is hacked and people are talking about supporting a hacked copy it is just as bad as talking about how to hack it.

Seems to me the best thing that can happen is the program die. It is clear that the developer is not interested in seeing his work continue.
You can run but you will only die tired.

Running a hacked versions is just one of the ways that people are keeping TodayPlus running. There is another way that is basically pretty simple, unfortunately Willa has asked that it also is not to be discussed here on Brighthand.

Besides, SRS is aware that people are still running TodayPlus, reread BenL's post with link I provided earlier. The only thing that he asks is that the application and information on hacks not be posted.

Unfortunately I have to agree with the general sentiment that has been expressed so far.

TodayPlus is *NOT* shareware, freeware or public domain.

Its licensed use has long expired. Just because the built in expiration can be circumvented doesn't make it right.

It is also one thing to "tweak" this stuff for personal use and quite another to openly promote it, and in the case of at least one *unnamed* individual to profit from it (through add-in skins that *REQUIRE* TodayPlus version 11 and 12).

Like it or not, all derivative works are making use of intellectual property (including the skin definitions) that is *not* theirs to use, distribute or
    promote.

Continued use of TodayPlus in any manner without the explicit consent of the author (srs) can be challenged on ethical, moral and legal grounds.

As a result, I believe that all legitimate websites (e.g. Brighthand, Handango, PocketGear etc.) should *strongly discourage" discussion, distribution and promotion of TodayPlus.

TodayPlus represented some of the best and worst in "community" software development, but in my opinion the time to move on has long passed.

    Just my two cents.....

    This is my opinion:
I respect Willa's desicions very much and by saying the comment above it has been confirmed to me that ANY way that TP gets used is against the wishes of the developer.

A while back srs himself said he doesn't mind any discussion or trading of skins for TodayPlus as long as the hacks and the binary code is not spread around, or discussed. So having the forum is NOT going against SRS (The Developer) in any way.

Oh, got it. So basically, jhollin's TP forum is a private forum (open only to people who have already circumvented the expiration) and not intended for the community-at-large.

Since SRS has stated that the code cannot be distributed nor can the circumvention of the expiration, that means that can not be any "new" TP users. (Because to do so would violate the author's wishes).

Essentially, it is a "survival" forum for existing TP users... and no one else. That's makes it more clear.

I think I am qualified a "new" TP users since I used it after all the things happened to TP and before I learned the whole picture. It has been great and fun to use it. But, to respect SRS's willing, I think I will take my TP and ET2 off my PPC.

If SRS you are watching the forum, please accept my apology for not respecting your willings in the past few months.
