I don't know it this comment is directed to me or someone else but either way I think it deserves a response. HP or any other company is not too concerned about what you paid them six months ago but what you will pay them today. Any other understanding on how a corporation works is a little naive in my opinion. Within your framework, it's safe to assume all corporations are money hungry. Just like you, they want to get as much bang for the buck. Take it or leave it but that's how it works. You call it greed when it's HP but what is it when it's you?Originally posted by hukuju
Corporately they may have too many Yes men..........
The only thing anyone is guaranteed at the time of purchase is was what you actually buy and what the manufacturer places in writing.
I bought a new car in 2002 and the next year they offered new options that I could not retro fit into mine because they changed the wiring harness. The nerve of them! You want a better example...there is no guaranteed that a new computer you buy today will be upgradeable to the next version of Windows.
I'm not trying to defend HP because I would like to have the upgrade too but I just don't understand some people's sense of obligation. The world owes us very little...especially an OS upgrade for a consumer electronics that is not defective because the OEM refuses to offer it. If it was never promised and the current OS is not defective, make peace with it and move on!
The Toshiba e740 is a different situation because the original device and/or OS was defective and I could see someone making an argument for restitution

That would be nice but if it isn't in writing...apparently HP doesn't agree. Send them a complaint and vote with your wallet!Originally posted by mjpint
HP, however, charges a premuim for their iPaqs. I believe that they should offer an SE upgrade.

I find it strange that they were offering WM2003 upgrades for 39xx/55xx but when it comes to an SE update, it's a no-go.
I've a h4150 and to be honest, I'd not expect an upgrade to WM2004 but I do expect an update to WM2003SE.
The present ROM update is not worth applying for me right now - I want to update my .net CF but to SP2 which I believe is current - but I don't want to give up my valueable RAM!
And the enhancements to PIE and the landscape-on-the-fly switching would be exceeding nice too.

The solution is simple. If you want a WM2003SE device buy one and don't reward HP by its decision. That's more productive than complaining about what they 'owe' you or focusing on a false sense of entitlement! That's what I'm going to do!

I bought my Axim X3i because I saw that Dell offered the 2003 update to X5 owners, and read that Dell was great at offering updates. And of course the price was great. I don't even have my axim 7 months and I find there will not be the upgrade, that angers me. First Dell says there will be an update then there won't, very poor bussiness practice. Like I said once before "When Dell uses the word service it just is a word in an advertisement, and means nothing" When Dell moved there support to India, I started to lose my respect for them, now I have lost it all. Maybe the new CEO is interested in what the users think, we sure know Bill wasn't.

Hey there,
just to add something to this discussion: The main reason
for me to buy big brands is to get a long time support
when it comes to OS and driver updates. For example
I bought a toshiba notebook back in 1998 and all
updates are still provided via their homepage.
If HP should REALLY refuse to release OS updates
for their products (unless for obvious reasons like
lack of memory), this was the last product I bought from HP.
I have an Ipaq 2210. I will send a protest email to
their support which probably won't help.
Cheers,
Jens

I was one of the unfortunate souls who purchased an X5 when they were first released with WM2003. Having been stonewalled for nearly 4 weeks and incessant denials by Dell of a problem, I immediately returned it for a full refund. I learned first hand that Dell will deliberately ship a defective product simply to meet deadlines and willing to outright lie to make a sale.Originally posted by joelw135

Thank you joelw135 , for putting this into perspective. People like to knock the "big guy" (HP in this case)... and based on what? Internet rumor? A sense of entitlement? They completely ignore the fact that there are companies like Dell that make actual promises and then break them... that knowingly produce defective products and then deny, deny, deny, in order to keep the sale.Tom Perconti (aka SpeedRacer - Lancelot of the Information Superhighway)
