I just mossied on over to the pocketinformant discussion boards and the policy for upgrades seems to be that if a new major version is released within 3 months of your purchase, you get it free. They are currently projecting the end of January for a release, so I think we should be ok.

edit: here's the link. It clearly states that if you purchase within 3 months of a major upgrade, you get it free. Hope that alleviates some concern.

On the PI support board, they are saying they are hoping for "late Jan/early Feb" for Version 5 release. That could be tight as far as the three months go.

That's what the users-in-the-know are saying. Alex, the developer, said late January. You're right, though, it is tight. But we still get a 50% off discount if it's after that. So it's not really a deal but we get to use PI legally for 3 more months. I think that PI is worth $4/month we'll have paid.
