Default desktop wiped out contacts, created file address.002.dat

I had to shutdown my laptop today for some updates to take effect (I usually just shut it and it goes into standby). When I started it up again this afternoon and went to open my palm desktop software I got an error message that said something to the effect of "couldn't open contacts, created new file address.002.dat"

Can I use that to get the contacts back onto the desktop? When I go to contacts now it says there are none to display, and I used to have hundreds. I don't hotsync regularly, but I probably did a few months ago or so, so I'm sure I could just transfer them from my zire onto my laptop, but I'm wondering why it did this, and if I can get them back (I know I've changed a few items in contacts that wouldn't be on the zire...not a huge deal though).

    any thoughts?

Use import from within Palm Desktop. Good luck. The last Windows critical update killed off my hotsync icon in the system tray. Got it back. Looking forward to what M$ will do the next time.

I tried import first (before posting my question) but it wants .aba, and I've got .dat???
