Unhappy Windows ME and IIIc - Hotsync freezes computer

I have a IIIc and want to hot sync it on my computer with Windows ME. I have installed Palm Desktop 4.1. When I plug in the hot sync into the back of the computer, it makes my computer freeze. The computer runs fine without the hotsync plugged in. My modem is on COM 3, so my only choice is COM1.

There are two likely possibilities - the first is probably causing the freezing problem, but you will probably also need to fix the second:

    1. There was/is a problem with IIIc cradles and some PC's. See this article.

    2. COM1 and COM3 normally share the same IRQ, so HotSync usually isn't successful when the Palm is on COM1 and the modem is on COM3. You might try uninstalling the modem (Control Panel -> Add/Remove Hardware), then reboot and force it to COM4 when you reinstall it.

    Default Hotsynce freezes

Thank you. I will try calling Palm. Because of these problems, I had been using it on another computer - I haven't been able to do a hot synce since some time last year -- it won't connect. It had been doing fine for awhile, but suddenly quit. Maybe the adapter will help it on either computer!

    Default Hotsync - COM 4

Is there any way to figure out what is on COM4 before I change everything? Could changing COM ports damage anything? I am willing to try stuff, but don't want to mess stuff up! It was scary when it froze then would hang up!

I called Palm and they are sending me the adapter.

It won't let you install the modem on COM 4 if something is already there.

    Default Uninstalling modem

If I uninstall the modem, then reboot, will it automatically try to reinstall the modem? Or do I go to Add/Remove Hardware to reinstall it ?

    Thanks.

I'm pretty sure it will automatically try to reinstall it when you reboot.

    Talking Hot sync -- yea!

I received my adapter, yesterday. After installing it, I was able to hot sync on my regular computer for the first time. It works to have the modem on COM3 and the hotsync on COM1. I am greatly relieved.

Thank you soooo much for your help!
