Unhappy one palm Xv two desktops

    Hi all,
I am very new to this site but so far it looks great.

I have a Palm Vx running the 3.5 palm software.

My desktop is running NT4 svce pk 6 and palm desktop 4.1.
I have a serial connection to it and it is hotsyncing fine.

My coworker also has a serial connection to her NT4 svce pk 6 and palm desktop 4.0.1.

I want to try network hotsync via TCPIP to her machine from mine. I have read several solutions on the Internet but their are some options they call for that I don't see on my palmpilot. Has anyone had success or more importantly, the instructions to make this happen?

On the hotsync menu I see Local and modem(shouldn't that be network?)

    Any help would be appreciated

    Bill

    Hi Bill.

To HotSync your Palm Vx from your co-workers NT box over the network to your NT box, you will need to do the following.

    On your Win NT box:

    1. Enable the Network HotSync option. Single left-click on the HotSync icon, and check Network.

    2. Next, choose Setup from the HotSync menu. When the Setup window appears, click the Network tab. Check the checkbox next to the Palm user id that is on your Palm Vx.

    3. Click the TCP/IP Settings button. Not your NT box's IP address.

    On the Palm Vx.

    1. Launch the Palm OS HotSync application.

    2. Tap the Palm menu button, and then choose LANSync Prefs from the Options menu. Tap the LANSync option, and then tap Ok.

    3. Once again, from the Options menu, choose Primary PC Setup. Enter your NT box's netBIOS name, and it's IP address, and tap Ok.

    Optional

    4. Again, from the Options menu, choose Conduit Setup, and uncheck the Conduits that you do not wish to HotSync across the network, and then tap Ok.

On your co-worker's Win NT box:

    1. Place your Palm Vx in the cradle, and press the HotSync button.

    Alan,
    Thanks for the quick response.

When I go to the remote machine and hit the hotsync button, it is trying to connect via the modem even though I clicked on lansync.

Confusing to me. I am on an ethernet segment. Both machines are on the same segment.

    Thanks
    Bill

Are you able to use the Windows NT ping command to ping your computer either by IP address or NetBIOS name from your co-workers computer?

Try going into the Palm HotSync application, tap the menu button, and choose Modem Sync Prefs from the Options menu. The the Modem Sync prefs to "Network".

Then try to perform a network HotSync.

Check your HotSync settings (on the Palm):

Modem Sync Preferences: Direct to Modem
    LANSync Preferences: LANSync
    Primary PC Setup:
-Primary PC Name: FQDN of machine you're synchronizing to
-Primary PC Address: IP of machine you're synchronizing to
-Subnet Mask: leave this blank unless you're on a VPN

    On the desktop:
Make sure you have "Network" checked on the machine you're synchronizing to, as well as the machine you're synchronizing from.

Make sure there's no firewall between the two machines.

    thanks guys.
I was able to put the ip addr on the palm along with the netbios(computer) name.

Do I need to do a hotsync at the primary machine in order for the palm to recognize the network settings? (i read that somewhere).

    thanks
    Bill

Yes, I think you have to do at least one local hotsync to both machines.

By the way, the machines need to have TCP/IP enabled. The NetBIOS name isn't necessarily (in fact, I it's never) the same as the DNS name, so if you don't have a DNS entry, don't put in a name -- use the IP instead.
