Default How To Begin Developing For The Palm?

Hello! This is my first post here.

Currently I work as a VB/ASP/SQL/Oracle developer for business systems on Win2000. However, I'm becoming more and more intruigued by the explosion of the Palm.

I'd like to begin dabbling in development for the Palm, but I am not sure where to begin. For example, what language would I use? What development IDE? Where can I find resources and references for learing to program for the Palm? How do I debug the programs that I write?

In short, I know nothing. But I am keen on learning.

Recommendations to get me started on the right path are appreciated.

Since you mention you're a VB programmer you might want to check out Appforge at http://appforge.com/

A good place to start is at the Palm site where they offer a free GCC compiler and instructions on getting started along with docs and the 4.0 SDK

    http://www.palmos.com/dev/gettingstarted.html

There's also a nice website with alternatives to using C/C++ at

    http://www.winikoff.net/palm/dev.html

They list onboard as well as Win32 kits.

For quick and dirty apps I recommend you check out Plua and SmallBasic. They're both very good. Plua has hooks to the OS while smallbasic is a lot like the old Qbasic on DOS but very extensive in features.

    Hope that helps

Forgot to mention the PalmOS programmers FAQ at

    http://tangentsoft.net/palmfaq/

    Those should get you started

If you want to create commercial grade apps there is no subsitute for C. You can use C++ if you must but expect your apps to be a bit on the pudgy side.

Codewarrior is industry standard, though lots of guys use the free GNU tools to good effect. We looked at using them for about a day (since our lead coder loves all things *nix) and then quickly ran towards CW for the productivity it gave.
