    Question Garmin's Mobile XT software

Does anyone know or think if it might ever support non-Garmin GPS receivers?

You are really hopeful, aren't you? Garmin obviously has no commercial interest in that venture for obvious reasons and if they want to make money out of selling the maps+app, they will have difficulty in locking the maps to the specific GPSr as 3rd party vendors may not provide unique serial numbers for their GPSr like the ones embedded in cellphones/PDAs. If the GPSr chips had unique IDs like Network Interface Cards, then maybe it would be worth looking into for Garmin.
    Thanks & regards,

    Saibal

Yeah I'm hopeful, and it can be done and still make what they're making now. Even Garmin's latest beta indicates that this release doesn't support non-Garmin GPS receivers, which could make one believe they might come out with a version that will.

From your sig, Rambler, I can see why you're interested.

Right now I have an AT&T 8525 and I use a GPS20 SM. I like the Mobile XT software, but if I was to get an HTC Kaiser (AT&T 8925?) at some point, I'd rather use the built-in GPS than carry an external Bluetooth one.

I can assure you that the Mobile XT V4.10.10 and newer version, can run on non-Garmin device. The Mobile XT is designed so that it can run on either Garmin and non-Garmin GPS/device. I think you will here further announcement from Garmin (I hope so).

According to Garmin and others here - no. So how is this done, and how can you assure us?

That would be nice but I don't think so.

The new locking machanism had been introduced in Mobile XT. At this time, this is my info. Beleive it or not is up to you.

In som countries, DOPOD (PPC Phone) are offering Mobile XT using build in GPS. Nokia N95 can also run Mobile XT using its build in GPS as well. CHECK IT OUT.

Yes, the new locking mechanism is that the Garmin software won't work with a non-Garmin GPS receiver. Garmin's previous Que software could be used to work with a non-Garmin GPS, not so with the Mobile XT software.

Yes, Garmin has made some specific versions to work non-Garmin OEM hardware, and some people have wrote software to overcome this issue, but for the PPC/Palm version of the Mobile XT software - a Garmin GPS is required. At least until Garmin decides to change this requirement, but it's not likely.

    Hi Rambler,

You still enjoying the HTC X7501? I ordered mine at Amazon and awasit delivery. I too would love to have GMXT 10work with the internal GPS but I think you are correct, Garmin isn't about to let that happen.

Not sure which forum I should look at to see your comments\review of your experiences with the 7501????
