    Default Show Saved Routes?

I ride motorcycles and are always looking for new scenic routes.I would like to have these new routes show up on the map as I ride, to remind me that there is a scenic route near me. Is there any way to have routes show up on the map as do Tracks. Tracks show up the best, but what if I have not traveled there? Is there any way to fool the Ique in to making a track if not actually going there? What about Saved Routes showing up on the screen. Is programming possible?

The iQue firmware doesn't support this. Since the routes are stored in nonvolatile RAM, and Garmin doesn't provied any documentation to access this memory area, neither is it likely that anyone will be able to write a program to extract the routes and show them in the way you want to do it.

Any chance of making a track without actually going there?

Yes, but not in the iQue, as far as I know. And since the iQue can only export tracks, not import them, that will not help you, even if you can make the track on the PC, for example.

Using the iQue in simulation mode does not create any track, so that will not help.

Sending someone else, with the iQue, is not the kind of answer you were looking for, I guess?

You could create a waypoint for the start or end (or intermediate via) of such a route. The Que will then display the waypoint, BW will also show you it's aproach. The later is easy with FF - just make a script to flash the BW waypoint screen. Or set a waypoint alarm for it like our British friends do for all their speedcams.

I have thought about letting someone else record the tracks, but not the answer. At present, I am using waypoints like you suggested. Seems no easy way. Seems like someone could find a way to have tracks or maps sent from Mapsource.

I haven't tried, but I think it could be made into one of these transparent maps, which you then can show on top of the City Select maps in the unit. That would also make it easy to select to show or not to show, from the GPS map preferences setting.

But then that requires some fiddling at the computer, in order to create the map.

I have done several track overlays by this method - but I hesitated to put it forward as a solution to the query OP.

Making home-brewed Garmin-compatible maps is possible, but it's no trivial thing. Such a project involves using apps such as GPSMapEdit and cgpsmapper, and these tend to be in the "one wrong move and you're dead" category of technical software.

There are some online tutorials relating to their use, but the attitude often seems to be: if you don't know how to use it, you shouldn't be using it.

Having said all that, the process (at least for track overlays) is easy, though not simple, once the techniques have been mastered. It looks worse than it is - but it DOES look bad...

So, we could make these maps appear on top of the Ique Maps???

    Certainly.

User-created maps can be given an attribute of being transparent - they are displayed with, rather than instead of, the existing Garmin maps. I used the word "overlay" for convenience, though in fact the extra detail is compiled into that one single map which gets loaded into our GPS unit.

There are many different uses for this technique: Here in Europe, there is no equivalent to the US Topo Mapping product sold by Garmin in North America. However, an enterprising mapper has taken satellite elevation data provided by NASA (SRTM mission) and turned it into Garmin-compatible contour mapping for the whole of the British Isles. The attachment shows what this looks like on an iQue 3600...
