Talking 740 WiFi status icon seems lame...

Hello, I've had my 740 for about 6 weeks now and like it very much (previous PPC was iPaq 3100). The most frustrating thing about it is the WiFi status icon. Here are my gripes:

    - tapping on it invokes animation zoom to open the ON or OFF selection. This seems to be slow - especially since I have to do this almost every time I turn the 740 on. (I know I could turn off WiFi power management but at a cost of battery life...)

    - The WiFi icon tells you nothing more than whether it is on or off. Why not signal available indication, or even signal strength? (my WiFi PC card and Ornico drivers I used with my iPaq did this!)

    - Getting to the wireless LAN utility in Settings takes many taps. Because the WiFi status icon is so featureless, one needs to go to the setup utility all the time (for instance, office to home WAP setup is different, etc.)

Is there any third party app that helps use the WiFi without so many taps! It seems Toshiba could have made the control of WiFi so much easier if the status icon had some more functionality. I hope 750 owners got a better WiFi icon!

Install the wifi update on Toshiba's site it allows direct access to wifi settings and shows signal on the wifi icon.

Is this the latest WiFi driver update that most other threads in this forum warn not to install?

Yuppers - the one and only... I use it - and have had no issues.
Yes it does beep when the signal changed - I like that feedback...

I like the update also. Do a backup before installing, since loading it will be the only way to ever get the old drivers. I don't mind a soft reset once or twice a week to get the WiFi back on, but some do.

It's not bad unless it is beeping about every 15-30 seconds like mine does! Also, the related overall system slowdown (very small, but still noticable) gets annoying fast. Right now, I have to leave the volume off on my e755 when using WIFI. Does anyone know if there is a way to just disable the signal beeps without disabling the whole WIFI indicator?

Search this forum, and you'll find another threads discussing this issue. jmbneaf came up with a solution involving removing/replacing the sound file associated with the "beep".
