Angry ROM UPDATE! DOES NOT WORK!

I tried this on both my XP box at home and my Windows ME laptop and cannot get the damn thing to work at all. Going to cart the cradle with me to work and try it on my new XP system at work. It DOES not have Activesync on it. My XP system canot connect at all and my ME system says my model number is invalid or doe snot match. GRR! I REALLY wanted to have this ROM update for my trip. SIGH!!!!! Oh and that's the OFFICIAL ROM Update not the one floating around Brighthand. I contacted support and they did not have any knowledge of an update. I had to SEND them the link!

    Angry

I use Win98 and I get as far as the 'Begin Download Over USB Now' prompt, but when I click on the Start button in the Flash Update Tool, it says something about the ROM not being compatible with my e740 - I wonder if it is because I have the old bootloader (1.02) and the ROM seems to have 1.06.

Would it mess it up if I uploaded the bootloader first ?

I did make a backup, but the instructions seem to indicate that this is for safety only, and will probably not be needed. Is this true ? i.e. can I flash a new ROM and not have to reinstall my software ? Would this also be true for the CF update procedure ?

Subject: Toshiba PDA Support Request from Joel McLaughlin

    Customer Name: Joel McLaughlin
    Customer Email:
    PDA Model: e740
    Problem Category: Other

I have a e740 and I tried the ROM update and the program cannot connect to the PDA. It works fine under Activesync. My Model Number is and Serial is . I tried it both on Windows XP and a Windows ME machine (it told me on the me machine my model number did not match up or something). I really want this ROM update to fix some of the issues the e740 has. I can return for maintenence, but I need to have the machine back for a flight on Sunday so It would be out of the question to send it in now as I need it on my trip.

    Default ROM Update

    More from Toshiba:

Dear sir: The update was posted today . I would also ask if you read the disclaimer concerning the instillation of this firmware as is? We are sorry for any inconvenience we realize this is not the answer you wish to hear. This update was not approved by Toshiba and was posted with a proper disclaimer concerning its use. Again we are sorry for any inconvenience you believe we have caused.

Ok...you have to REALLY look hard for this disclaimer, (it's under a SMALL link look for the word view linked) and it appears they have no warrantee on installing this. Isn't this idiotic?? I could see if you could totally rebuild one if one was totally hosed. But with PDA's, you generally can't if you really hose it. Seems to me they'd want to fireproof this! Anyway, I got both installed by using a CF card. YAH! CF card way DEFINITELY easier to work with then USB Flash way. Just make sure to do the bootloader part LAST! I almost fugged mine up by doing it in the wrong order. I decided well, I can't fug it up anymore then it already was and I reloaded the bootloader.....it seem to have hung at the end, but evidently that was not the case. When I reset, it booted and found the new ROM! YEAH! Bad part is I was up most of the night and for part of it my heart was fluttering a bit as it refused to load anything(dreading going on my trip sunday with no PDA! or making a trip to use me extended warantee!).

I would NOT lavish praise on Toshiba at this point. The ROM is good, but it should have been better from the start. Some of the problems there were was inexcuseable. No High security package? Problems with microdrives and WiFi? Well, anyway it seems that those are all fixed and the performance is up. WAY up! Looking up contacts is superfast and webpages even render quicker. It also seems that the scroller problem and other button problems are fixed as well. I have yet to fully delve into the rom, but it looks like a winner thus far. Now if Toshiba would only support the damn thing better. I am going to e-mail one more reply to them and tell them thanks for the help, but I got it installed without your help.

If your are at all squimish about this, I would either not do it if your happy with it, or have a friend do it. If you squeal enough you may be able to get the thing fixed up by them. Is it worth it? Yes. Does it work as advertised....well, not on my machines!

Couple other beefs but they are minor. Where's the Home app update? If you have ever seen the version of the home app on the 550g it's superb! Especially since they have yet to get a good skinable task switcher to work well with the WiFi icon. Anyway, the new theme it came with is pretty cool though.

You have to go via a CF, they are still working on version via USB.

    CF trial did not work.
    I wonder:
The singapore site had an instruction where they insisted to installing the bootloader first then the new kernel,
    bootloader 1.05/ rom update 13.
Now with bootl 1.06 and rom update 18 this is just the other way around???
    Toshtosh and others please ?

Same with me. Using a CF did not work.
layman's question: On the Toshiba site they say the USB- ROM update is only for win2k or XP, could that be a reason why it won't work on win 98 although all the other screens a equal to the readme description?
