8700g thumbwheel losing precision?

My 8700g thumbwheel is losing precision, for lack of a better word. The thumbwheel used to stop at each line, and now no matter how carefully I move the thumbwheel, it keeps moves a few lines at a time.


For example, 1 move of the thumbwheel would put the cursor on line A. Another move would stop at line B. Now, 1 move jumps to line C instead of line A.

I think my berry is about 3 years old and has gotten very heavy use as well as slinding outta my hands a few times. Wondering if age or internal damage could be a cause?
