    Default Ordered an A730w

    Just preordered my a730w.

I had thought about an axim and a loox, but decided on the a730w. The big thing was the usb host ability. I loved my h2200 (lost it while traveling ) but it was limited. The built in wifi and extra ram are a minimum in my book. The high end Ipaq was out of the question because of the touchpad.

The only thing that I want that the asus doesn't have is the graphics accelerator. But I don't think many games will fully utilize it until late next year.

Most of the peripherals that I plan to buy will be bluetooth (i have a keyboard and GPS) or at least not proprietary.

Looking forward to this new PDA.

I just ordered mine (BT only version) and I'm dying to hear from other users. Where are you?!?

I want to know if this has CIR or not. I would also like to hear how the battery is working with normal users. The reviewers ranged from excellent to poor, so I need some real user feedback. I'd also like to know how well the extended battery lasts, because I may very well buy an extended battery as my secondary.

Anyone buy a case for theirs yet? I'll be looking for a hard case, like the rhinoskin because I carry my pda in my rucksack (military) or in my back pocket all the time and don't want to damage it.

I got my 730W last night! I absolutely love it! I'm moving from a Palm T2, so the Pocket PC interface is new to me and I haven't yet figured everything out, but so far I'm extremely happy. The screen is awesome! Even with the plastic shipping film still on (plan on keeping it on until I can the appropriate Brando protector arrives in the mail) it looks amazing. Bright, clear, wonderful. The WiFi is equally amazing -- I just turned it on and it instantly connected to our home network, with no fuss or problem.

Merry Christmas to all, and especially to the gallant and very patient Justin O'Dea :-)

    Cheers,
    Elizabeth

w/ no configuration on your PPC side? - sounds like your home wifi network is WIDE OPEN. Imagine your neighbor firing up his laptop and having the same experience - instantly connecting to YOUR home network!

I see too many of these - please be aware of security risks of wifi, it doesn't take much to make your home network a little more secure (at least to the point that a casual user in range can't connect to it). Lots of how-tos and tutorials on the web if you just google for it.

-just trying to look out for you & others, so please don't take it the wrong way.

I appreciate your concern revolve, but don't worry -- we have WEP enabled, and I had to tell my little Pal what the network key was, but having done that I need only click on the menu option to "Turn Wi-Fi On" and it all works instantly.

I connected instantly, too. I don't have any WEP protection on my Router, but it doesn't matter, as I live deep in the woods with no signal detected outside of my yard. You would have to sit on my front porch to connect, and I do believe I would see that!
But along this same line, when you find an unprotected network or free hotspot and your PPC says it can't get an IP address (no, not the Asus; it has no problems, but the Loox does this all the time.), is there any remedy for that? Shouldn't you be able to connect anywhere there's an open hot spot?

Good for you guys. I'm glad to hear that you are practicing some security for yourselves. I guess "deep in the woods" would be secure enough for me as well. It seems that nowadays, even just turning off your SSID broadcast and using MAC filtering can be enough - especially if you're in a populated area where your neighbor's open network is more attractive/easier to access for leaching purposes.

I guess I should remember that the regular BH forum member probably is going to be more sophisticated than the average joe when it comes to technology.
