I'm using a password for added protection. I have sensitive documents that only I need to view. Would a soft or hard reset wipe out the password function? My fear is if I lost the Axim, the PW screen could be bypassed with a reset.

Rich The people who designed the PocketPC are a little smarter than that. Give them a little credit.
If you do a soft reset, your password will stay enabled.
If you do a hard reset, the password will be wiped out, but so will all your sensitive files as long as they are not stored in the Built-In Storage or is a CF or SD card.

Can you protect individual files or folders or is it just for the whole unit?

If for example your files are in Word or Excel, then yes you can protect files individually. When saving your file go to FILE/SAVE AS/ on the next screen (depending on what version of office) you can choose TOOLS then you should see SECURITY OPTIONS. From here you can set a password for that particular file.......HTH

Are you talking abou the desktop version of Word/Excel or the Pocket version? I don't think you can password protect individual files on the PPC without some third-party software. I know there is some out there, but don't use any so I'd suggest doing a search on this board

...surely if a file is password protected from your PC and you copy it the synch folder for your Pocket PC, the file would not open without a password?

Anyway, my Axim is due on Monday and besides me charging it, that will be the first thing I test.....
