On the front page of the Marketplace section in the WSJ, on 12/12/02, in the Personal Technology column written by Walter Mossberg ...

he compares/contrasts the Dell Axim and the Palm Tungsten. It is clear he likes the Palm.

The Axim "is so big and bulky that you really can't carry it in a pocket or small purse comfortably ... I still prefer the Palm operating system, with its clean, elegant user interface, to the Pocket PC system, which I find too cluttered with long menus and file folders ... For those who are attracted to the Pocket PC, the new Dell Axim 5 is a rare bargain -- as long as you are willing to carry your PDA in a briefcase or large purse."

Briefcase or large purse? Is he sure he didn't review a Tablet PC?

"But [the Axim] is big. it's over 5 inches long, 3.2 inches wide, and about 0.7 inches thick. It weights 6.9 ounces, a lot for a pDA ... Palm's Tungsten T ... is very short, at just four inches ... is three inches wide, 0.6 inches thick and weights 5.6 ounces. It easily fits in a pocket or small purse and feels very sturdy."

Hmmm ... his pocket or small purse must be 4" x .6" x 3" -- which coincidentally is the size of a ... Palm Tungsten.

Come on, with biased reporting like this in the WSJ, it's no wonder Palm is selling more!

Not to mention that it costs nearly $200 more, and Palm OS5 is a joke of an upgrade, its liek the difference between windows 95 (os3), windows 98 (os4) and windows me(os5). Windows ME had some interesting stuff in it, but it was in no way a new os.

But I do agree that the Axiom is kinda huge for the generation. I know I know, the arguments of price and expansion... it's still bricky.

I'm waiting till next year when dell's slim version comes out...

I'll be curious to see how he reviews the HP1910. If size is his criteria then that becomes a moot argument.

If he instead decides to compare the 1900 with Sony's new $500+ unit, then he might harp on how few features the 1900 offers over the PocketPC platform.

All I can say is the Palm-philes are looking sillier by the day. For $299 you can buy a full featured PPC like the Axim or the slimmest PDA in existence in the 1910. All the new Palm OS5 units are still $200 more expensive with arguably less capability.

yeah, sony is more expensive, palm os5 sucks, only 11mb usable memory, no SD/CF slot. you pay more for less. BUT, sony does have the best screen, high res 480x320, that's twice the res of a pocket pc. axim screen is no where near the quality of the sony. an axim with a 480x320 sony screen will be perfect. I hope sony will make a pocket pc one day.

I agree, memory stick and compact flash would be awsome, although i dont see them incoporating both because of the size of memory stick.

Well it wouldn't be awesome for someone like me, who has never owned a Palm and has no reason to buy into the proprietary Memory Stick expansion world. Give me SD any day. ;)

At $500 in my opinion the Tungsten is a joke. It's a nice machine no doubt but with the new PPC price wars Palm has serious pricing issues.

$500 for a OS that is just starting to get Multimedia. Why?

I wonder if he is and/or owns a:

Macintosh
Discover Card
Volkswagon
Has a Type B personality
Is right-brained.

I say this seemingly prejudicial blubber because when I worked for a leading software retailer years ago, it was uncanny... Those people who bought Macintosh software had Discover Cards and likely had a VW, were artistic/left handed, etc...

My brainfart of the day

PS: Unlike Trent Lott, I mean absolutely NO derogatory or detrimental attitude to this post. Its just a piece of converstaion :D :p

The new DELL F'in Rules!

Well, i forgot to mention my reasoning for memory stick, i have a sony digital camera, memory stick would be very useful for previewing pictures and espically since i already own 3 of them.

Whats wrong with a discover card? Nothing better than the big cash back check at the end of the year.

No one said anything was wrong with it. It's just an observation. Certain types of people tend to do certain types of things. Doesn't make them wrong or right.
