Okay, let me preface this by saying that I'm moving to a PPC device from years of using Palms, so maybe there's some adjustment needed or something. However...

My Axim seems really touchy when it comes to text recognition. It picks up lots of wayard pen strokes apparently and seems really awkward to write on. After realizing that I could select "block Recognizer" and still use Grafetti things got much better but I still find that my Visor Prism is much easier to accurately enter text into.

IS it just me? Is there a difference in the sensitivity of the PPC's versus the Palms or teh quailty of the recognition software?

I'm liking the multimedia capabilities of the Axim but I'm not too thrilled with the text entry so far and hoping it's something I'll get used to.

I've always found the soft keyboard to be more reliable than the text recognition, with any of my Pocket PCs. I almost never hit the wrong key, whereas the text recognition has always seemed picky. It's probably just a matter of getting used to the new Pocket PC software.

I just thought of something and tried it out:

I used the heavier, round stylus from my Visor on the Axim. Not perfect but much, much better!

I'm wondering if the lightweight, flat stylus is screwing me up to some extent. Hopefully someone comes out with a heavier replacemnt soon.

Re: keyboard

Yeah, I used to use that for a long time on my Palm as well before I broke down and learned Grafetti with my most recent PDA before the Axim (the Prism) but I have to admit, once I learned Grafetti it really was a lot faster and more convenient to enter and update stuff. For me anyway.

I'm sure you're right, and I've heard good things about Transcriber, but I've never really found the time to sit down and figure out how to be more accurate with it. It's a cool technology to mess with every now and then, however (and cool for showing off your PDA). ;)

Tso, you might want to use transcriber and do the customize function to set each letter to how you write normally. It will take about 15 minutes but afterwards Transcriber works a ton better. And if you want even better recognition, check out Calligrapher, which is what Transcriber is derived from. It has even more options in handwriting recognition.
I use transcriber most of the time, and I'd say it's about 90% accurate. I also switch between letters and numbers, which improves my accuracy. That should be that much of a step for you because you're used to graffiti with the two sides.

I may have to try the customize route then.

I played with Transcriber initially but it seemed to be picking up a lot of extraneous crap. I wouldn't even realize I was hitting anything and I'd get a row of periods, other puncuation, skip spaces etc. and it would stil not recognize my letters correctly! It seemed really touchy. I was about to send the darn thing back for a bit there until I discovered that "block recognition" was Grafitti!

I guess it may just take some more time getting used to things and getting used to that light stylus too!
