I use a new Micro Sim card. My older Nokia N8 needed a sim card, the One S needs a micro sim card so I went this week to an ATT dealer to switch my card to a micro sim.
That doesn't quite match up with the spec sheet I saw; if it's a T-Mobile US phone, it should at least have 1700/2100 3G. Are you sure that that's not a listing for the international or T-Mobile Europe One S?

Still, if you've got 850 3G, you should be getting service at least some of the time, and 2G if not 3G. My bet is the connection settings. You might have to flash it with a ROM for an unbranded, unlocked One S in order to get access to the connection settings.

Then you would have to find out what are AT&T's and T-Mobile's and create entries for them. After that, check the entry depending which carrier you use. I think you can google for their respective APN station names.

Without APN setting you will not get data.

    Here is AT&T's.

    Here is T-Mobile's.

Support: APN settings for data and picture messaging (MMS): Android

All you do is simple create entries. The names are the the most important. You don't have to fill up everything.

Please note that a T-Moble HTC One S must have 1700/1900 on its 3G band. Without it, you are only likely to have the international or European version of the One S.

Even without the 3G data band, you should still get 2G EDGE data on both carriers as the phone will fall back to GSM EDGE for mobile data.

But the most important thing to do is Set the Access Point Station Name entries and enable it.

Thank you Drillbit, this is interesting.
I have returned my unlocked T-Mobile and purchased one that is factory unlocked, without any crappy carrier software. I should not have any connection problem with it.

Many phones, including HTC, and HTC especially in its international unlocked versions, do a self detect reading the SIM and automatically setting up the APN. But its possible the carrier versions have this capability removed and it still won't be available if the phone is unlocked, requiring you to create the APN entry manually if you hook it to another carrier. Which is very easy to do if you know the station name.

My first Android phone is a white MyTouch 3G, which is the T-Mobile branded version of the HTC Magic. It was unlocked and I managed to get it working with Asian carriers with 3G data and became my travel phone for a while.
