Default Update to Jelly Bean on a T-Mobile HTC One S unlocked ???

    Hi all,

I just got my new One S unlocked T-Mobile device that I use with an ATT micro sim. When I ordered it, I did not know it was a T-Mobile.

Do you know if this device will receive the Jelly Bean update? I know HTC has plans to update the One S and X, but because it is a T-Mobile with an ATT card, I am not sure I will receive the update. Have you had similar experience? Please, response if you are sure because I will return my phone if I cannot get the update. Thank you

I'll hope someone who knows comes along, but I'll make an educated guess. If what you mean is that this phone has a T-Mobil ROM, it would need the T-Mobile update, which would only roll out on the T-mobile network, so, no, I suspect you won't be able to update without rooting and flashing a new ROM yourself.

    Google (ASUS) Nexus 7, wifi+data (AT&T), Android 4.2.2, stock and un-rooted (so far )
LG Nexus 4: AT&T (Gophone), Android 4.4.2, stock and unrooted-- and probably staying that way.

Thank you Hook, this is exactly what I think. I am going to return my phone. The add was not very clear and I did not see it was a T-Mobile unlocked. I usually purchase devices unlocked without any crappy career software. I have to admit that the One S is difficult to find unlocked, I mean factory unlocked.

The phone will still get updates from T-Mobile regardless what carrier it is on. It will still update even if it doesn't even have a SIM, just purely on Wifi. I am saying this because I have direct experience. My first Android was a MyTouch 3G (HTC Magic) that is unlocked and running in one of the Guam carriers. It got its first update running on a local carrier (Docomo) and its final update without a SIM. I also have a Droid Eris, Droid Incredible and EVO 3D (Verizon, Verizon, Sprint) and they also got updates while running on the local carrier. The phones were unlocked, then made to run on the local carrier.

Now the updates are the carrier approved ones, specific for the carrier ones. They are not getting the generic updates that is issued for general international phones without any carrier approval.

In your case, if T-Mobile issues the Jellybean update for their One S, you will get it, regardless if the phone is unlocked, and what carrier is running on. Just to let you know, the servers pushing the update are Google's and you will still get it even if you are in Timbuktu with a wifi connection.

If HTC issues an update for their generic One S phones that are sold internationally without carrier lock, your phone won't get such updates.

Do note that the Asian One S is powered by a 1.7GHz dual core Qualcomm S3 chip, and is slower than the 1.5GHz Qualcomm S4 used on the T-Mobile One S. The European ones I think are powered by S4s.

You can find unlocked phones in places like Expansys USA or Negri Electronics.

The best price/performance value of any unlocked phone right now in the US is the Galaxy Nexus you can find in the Google Play store. It comes with Jellybean.

Thank you Drillbit. I am going to ask the seller to be sure.
I have also another problem: the GPS is not working with ATT. It works well at home with the wi fi, but not outside when the wi fi is not available. The screen stays idle with the message "Getting driving directions". I have still datas on my plan, so the problem doesn't come with my plan. Do you think it could be a carrier problem?

It means your mobile data is not working. GPS in this case isn't really GPS but rather positioning by reading your phone's IP address, along with triangulation by 3G to the base towers. True GPS by satellite works only outdoors (you can't get real GPS indoors without a clear sky), and works completely independently of wifi and 3G data.

Hi, I just bought the HTC One S on eBay. It's a T-mobile unlocked phone, and I am having the same problem as you.
Have you found any solutions to this issue ? Or is rooting the only way to have Jelly Bean ?

    Thanks

Yes, the only solution I found was to return the phone to the seller. I purchased one without any career logo or software and I don't have any problem with it.
