Direction difficulties.
I seldom travel but once a year our family goes down to the Gulf to stay at our favorite hotel on the beach. I have the directions down pretty well but the problem this year is that we will be doing the bulk of this trip after dark and I've never driven that route in the dark. It goes through a lot of small towns and I can see myself getting confused.
So I retraced the route with Google Maps, thinking there surely is an effortless way to get this into my Galaxy S and use the device in Car Mode.
Well, I can save the map to My Places and import this into the phone but I don't see how to get my customized directions to be followed by the phone.
I Googled and found that there is something called Chrome To Phone but I'm not using Chrome now.
Is there something I'm missing or has Google dropped a rather obvious ball?

Re: Direction difficulties.
Only found this out because you asked, so thanks for the good question. if you're in Maps and you tap the layers button, one of the options will be My Maps -- pick the one you've saved and it should overlay a route on the screen. Beyond that, I've run into problems trying to verify turn-by-turn on the phone (might be the insomnia…).
Also, will you have cell coverage the whole way? There are some labs for Maps, one of which addresses that -- no experience with it though.

Re: Direction difficulties.
Will do, and thanks for the tip!
Since I will be on major highways, even Tmo should suffice. I've only piddled about with navigation but have learned that it switches modes in 3g/4g areas and goes to a slower mode on EDGE (but still useful.)
I also previously found that it seems to cache a certain amount of map info but that's only good for as long as you keep navigation on or maybe run to the extent of your cached info.
In any event, this should be a good test of the system.
Catch 22: If I were on Verizon, I wouldn't give the coverage a second thought. But if I were on Verizon, I wouldn't have unlimited data, either.

Google Chrome to Phone: Most overlooked Froyo feature | Android and Me
Just found this. You don't have to use the Chrome browser. There's a Firefox plugin.

Re: Direction difficulties.
OK. Made it down here and it worked pretty well but was still a workaround. When I get back, I will investigate that plugin. During the trip, my better half was working with her Droid on VZW and found how to edit routes directly on the phone. I have some learning to do.
Bad news is that Tmo has no 4g down here on the Gulf.

Re: Direction difficulties.
I was pretty sure I posted in this thread yesterday. Short version: I thought the newest version of Google Maps for Android had what you were looking for.

Just so you know you weren't going crazy, when I came to the forum yesterday evening just after you and the form index indicated that you had made the last post in this thread, but when you clicked on that link or opened the thread,a misplaced headline news post appeared instead of your post-- some kind of forum hiccup, I guess.

Re: Direction difficulties.
Thanks LS. I thought I was losing it. The Times dumps so many of my comments that I just assume half of them get lost in the ether.

Re: Direction difficulties.
Strange glitch. But electronics do strange things.
What in particular about the newest version would have helped in this case? I'm pretty much a noob at navigation with Android.
