Oh. Yes, I managed to do that. There are limits, however. I couldn't save a map of my whole route, which extended from east central AL to the coast. It kept telling me my map was to big until I shrank it down until about the last quarter of the route (the whole trip was about 250 miles). But still an improvement.
Since my wife had had good success in altering her route right on the smartphone, I fiddled with that after I got home but was unable to do the same. Then I found that the reason was she was using VZ Navigator (which is free now with her unlimited data plan). With the Google product you either do the route on the laptop as described above or just live with what the app computes for you.
There are other solutions complete with maps on Play but at this point, I'd still prefer to just get a standalone GPS.
