    Default New Google Earth app

New revised interface - note the tabs that cinematically takes you the place clicked. Shows off Google's new 3D map technology. Images enclosed are the Petronas Towers, Venetian Macau and the volcano Tambora whose last super eruption caused a mini Ice Age during Napoleon's time.

Apple is trying to create a similar app which they are planning to release with IOS6. They are thinking to replace Google maps with their own maps app in IOS6. So I think both the software giants are going to clash again with their maps (both are already competing to rank no 1 in Smartphone OS). I think this destroys whatever iOS 6 plans to have. It is just amazing to see how the 3D images are being constructed, rendered and rotated right in front of your eyes. And no, Apple doesn't have this algorithm which converts the photographic data of a 2D image into a 3D one.

I've been an Apple critic in the past; but what makes you think they don't have something better? I haven't seen the Apple demo; but reliable sources with standing in tech have seen them and raved. Apple often gets too much credit, I agree; but to dismiss them out of hand without seeing what they have to offer seems very short-sighted.

Already there are reviews in the web that don't show Apple's new mapping to be as fine grained as Google's, nor able to give various transit directions. Google throws an army of 7000 employees working into geolocation, and the results shows. Apple needs to match this effort.

I suggest that we just wait and see. Nothing is final for comparison until iOS 6 is released in a finished version.
Experience is what you get when you thought you were getting something else.

This is a mobile app? I don't see how this can not bog down a smartphone, as well as chew through one's data rapidly.

Neat that they can do this but I'd much rather use GE on a desktop, which I do every day.

Yup, its a mobile (& tablet) app. In fact, this is probably among the most "sci-fi" things I ever saw on a mobile device. The pictures don't do credit to the way, the image forms around he screen. It actually starts from a perspective, then zooms and circles the scene in 3D, while all the time, it is composing the 3D model right in front of your eyes. Yes it sounds like to makes use of a lot of computing and GPU power (device is the Galaxy S3 in this case).

When you are zooming and panning into an image, like the volcano for example, it is like flying through it. To put it another way, god-like.

I dunno, the Times tech bloggers raved about the Apple maps; but some say what was shown isn't necessarily what we'll get; but my point was what Lelisa made. To assume ahead of time which is better is fruitless (pun intended).
