I didn't realize we had different phones. I think I would hate it if Sprint took control of whether I use WiFi vs 3G or 4G.

Drillbit, are you sure you're correct about the POP3 SMTP servers? My email provider is Netaddress and their POP3 SMTP server is smtp.postoffice.net. I have to provide a port number, as well as authenticate. I don't recall ever having an issue with this based on my ISP, and the instructions from Netaddress don't mention anything about that. As long as I know the server address, port, and can authenticate, I can send emails regardless of my ISP. Maybe I'm missing something in your explanation.

It depends on the policies of both your internet provider whose network you are currently using and the policies of the network you are accessing for email. If the network providing pop email provide you with their own smtp server there should be no problem.

I think Scjjtt is right. If he has been sing his setup successfully for a year, the problem shouldn't be that set up. Either the update changed something or broke something. Trouble is, I'm not sure what.

Many ISPs restrict and firewall outside SMTP use. Many institutions only allow sending from institutional addresses, for example, @institution.com only via the institution's SMTP server. Its all for security reasons which keeps getting tighter all the time.

Its possible before the update, you were unintentionally exploiting a 'hole' and the update plugged that hole and tightened up security. It is also possible, ISPs also started getting tight about the time of the update.

Being able to access an SMTP server outside of the ISP network means someone can use that server to spam email, or let's say, send email from a hacked SMTP account without being tracked internally by the ISP.

Its better for the sake of future security and portability to migrate out of POP3 and SMTP, and just use IMAP on the email accounts or the official apps for these email services.

I do have something to report - I should have check this out sooner but it is only my pop 3 account, which happens to be my default outgoing, that is not sending out email while on wifi.

All the other accounts work both ways using the default email app that allows me to have all the emails in one place - instead of having to open up their individual apps.

Have you checked with technical support for that account? It may be that they changed something or that they are actually having trouble with their servers.

Alright - I checked with our church's IT guy. You all would really like him - he speaks your language. I sent him this forum (& told him that Drillbit's advice is over my head - lol) & he did some research & then sent me the follow below. By changing my port from 25 to 112 everything now works!

''Drillbit is part true. Isp's block some ports. Most allow secured smtp. That is why our outgoing server must be set with the ip address and secure logon. If there is no place to enter the outgoing port 112 under advanced settings you might try outgoing server 209.147.117.6:112
. Outgoing server requires auth. & Use same user and password for sending. No SSL.''

I'm glad the issue is resolved, but it still is suspicious to me that things were great before the update, and then suddenly the problem arose. my 2¢ ;-)
