But I don't sync with gmail - it's only there as a placeholder (after the initial validation when I first created the account).

Doh! There it is-- I failed to notice the arrow button indicating that the gmail account was expandable.

It's purpose seems to be to filter the contacts by group.

When I add a contact, the contact goes into the My Contacts group, which is also the default on Gmail. I suspect your goes into blank because it doesn't know what else to do with them. It's also possible you don't have any system groups even though that is listed as an option in the group filters-- which is why GroupU doesn't show you anything.

    Google (ASUS) Nexus 7, wifi+data (AT&T), Android 4.2.2, stock and un-rooted (so far )
LG Nexus 4: AT&T (Gophone), Android 4.4.2, stock and unrooted-- and probably staying that way.

So you don't have that "System Group:My Contacts" group? You'd think that'd be the default (and that GroupU would be able to show it).

That's what I was talking about. Yes, I have that and it is the default group on both Android and Gmail.
